EDWARDS UNVEILS NEW COACH FOR WALES
'
On Saturday 17th January 2009, Edwards unveiled the new coach for Wales, and Warren Gatland was there to see it for himself, along with around 1,200 friends and customers of Edwards Coaches, along with fellow guests the Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, popular broadcaster Roy Noble, Wales kicking coach Neil Jenkins and other dignitaries.
Warren turned up to see the unveiling of the company’s new luxury coach to be used by the Welsh rugby team in the forthcoming RBS Six Nations at a special family open day at the Edwards Coaches base in Llantwit Fardre, giving visitors a free chance to look over the impressive state-of-the-art vehicle, and get close up to Wales’ largest privately owned coach company.
Modeled on the luxury transport for Liverpool FC and Manchester United, the new enlarged £350,000 Red Dragon Coach comes complete with four fridges and a deep freeze, satellite tv, and Wi-Fi wireless access which allows team coaches to make laptop presentations to the players in transit.
The public were invited to come along and look over the coach, as well as enjoying entertainment from the Cwmbach Male Choir, a school choir from Castellau Junior School, a bouncy castle and face painter, refreshments and other attractions in an event that also raised £700 for worthy causes, including the Special Baby Care Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
Edwards Coaches Director Jason Edwards said: “We wanted to create a warm, friendly, family day out, and were delighted when 1,200 people showed up, both customers and new faces. We were particularly pleased to welcome local dignitaries and well known guests including Warren Gatland to see the new coach for himself. He seemed really impressed with it, and hung around for quite some time, even stopping to listen to the school choir from Castellau. With over 200 staff we are a major employer in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and heavily involved in our local community, so this was our way of saying thank you to our customers and friends.”
Edwards has provided transport for the WRU for the past four years, just one element of a highly successful £15m turnover business that has been in the family for five generations. When George Edwards set up a travel business in the Valleys with a charabanc in 1925, Louis Armstrong was recording hits and Al Johnson was performing on stage.
Now, more than 80 years later the fifth generation of the Edwards family is running a business of 145 vehicles used for high quality international coach holidays, including special Red Dragon Coach Tours, school transport for over 5,000 children daily, and other travel needs. The company also has travel shops in Cardiff, Blackwood and on the Llantwit Fardre site.
The company recently launched its new summer brochure, and on Saturday took a record number of holiday bookings.
